Teeth Whitening is a dental technique that can be framed within Aesthetic Dentistry. It basically consists of improving the coloring of teeth that, over time, have acquired a dark or yellow color that the person finds unsightly. This technique will make the teeth acquire a whiter and brighter shade. The current popularity of aesthetics has made this dental procedure one of the most requested in recent years. In the times in which we live, Aesthetics is well known that it has a very important role for certain people. This factor plays an important role in a person's self-esteem and in their interpersonal relationships, in their social relationships, and also has an important role at the time of a job interview, which falls within human relationships. In a job interview, for example, if a person has stained, dark teeth, with cavities, missing teeth... this can influence the final result of that job interview.
The dental whitening procedure must be performed by a dentist trained and experienced in this technique and in the proper handling of chemical bleaching agents. Taking into account that different chemical compounds are applied to the teeth, it is important that teeth whitening be carried out under the supervision of your dentist in a dental clinic. Although there are a large number of whitening products that can be applied at home, it is advisable to consult a specialist first.
There are many reasons why our teeth can lose their natural color, including the passage of time, poor dental hygiene, the consumption of certain foods, certain medications and other substances such as coffee, tea, tobacco, wine and Cola soft drinks.
There are dental stains that are endogenous, that is, they are those that affect the dental piece during its formation phase, before these pieces appear in the mouth, and this can be caused by the use of some drugs such as tetracyclines (antibiotics that end up producing certain stains), due to vitamin deficiency or anomalies such as dental fluorosis in which an excess of fluoride in drinking water can cause dark stains on the teeth. Within the endogenous stains there are also those produced after a blow or dental trauma, fractures or due to the natural aging of the teeth, since over the years our teeth take on a more yellowish and dark color.
A blow, a fall, can cause dental trauma where the tooth will later darken, and this is because the blow has caused a small hemorrhage inside the tooth and that blood will later darken the dental piece giving it a brown hue.
Types of teeth whitening
Whitening in vital teeth
Teeth whitening techniques can be in the clinic: performed in the dental clinic under the supervision of your dentist.
At your home, or also a mixed technique that will be done first in the clinic and then continued at the private home.
Teeth whitening performed in the dental office.
It is carried out in the dental clinic by applying a bleaching agent that can be based on 35% hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, and can be activated by a light source. It is necessary to carry out a good and detailed oral prophylaxis beforehand and check that the oral cavity is healthy, that is, that there are no cavities at the time of whitening, that there is no inflammation of the gums, or tartar, or any oral pathology.
After this step, the area to be treated is isolated with a barrier that is usually a resin that is applied to isolate and protect the gums, so as to prevent the bleaching agent from coming into contact with the periodontal tissues. Then, once the gums and lips are well isolated, the whitening agent is added to the teeth to be treated. It is essential to follow the instructions of the manufacturer of the whitening system so that the results are satisfactory.
The Dentist will make one, two, or three applications in the session depending on the result that is obtained. 15 minute applications can be made by activating the whitening agent with a gel activating light, as is done in the Philips Zoom technique, for example. After that first application, the gel is removed and the result is observed, and another application may be required, and so on until the patient and their dentist are satisfied with the result.
It is the safest and most effective method, since a high concentration of the whitening agent is handled under the direct control of the Dentist.
Outpatient whitening (at home) under the supervision of a dentist.
In this type of whitening the concentration of carbamine peroxide is 10%. This method is performed at the patient's home, under the dentist's instructions. In the same way as in the previous whitening, it is necessary to carry out a good prophylaxis and an oral review before the treatment. A splint (a plate) made to measure for the patient is made by means of a mold in which the bleaching agent will be applied, in order to avoid any possible contact with the periodontal tissues (the gums), since the bleaching agent can be caustic and aggressive for soft tissues such as the mucous membranes of the mouth.
Whitening of non-vital teeth
The reason for the discoloration in non-vital teeth (teeth with Endodontics), or teeth that have suffered a blow or trauma where there was therefore a hemorrhage inside that tooth, or bacterial processes within the canals (pulp necrosis). This type of whitening is performed in the dental office and consists of removing all products or necrotic tissue existing in the pulp chamber in endodontically treated teeth or teeth with pulp necrosis, then applying the bleaching agent. The teeth whitening procedure can, in some cases, cause postoperative tooth sensitivity. But this can be effectively treated to reduce that sensitivity.
Over-the-counter teeth whiteners
According to current legislation, whitening products with a carbamide peroxide concentration greater than 0,3% or with more than 0,1% hydrogen peroxide must only be applied by dentists. Performing teeth whitening without medical supervision carries serious health risks.
